Theresa, Assisi (Study)

(private collection)

description A three-quarter length portrait study of a seated, elderly woman with a tame chicken perched on her right arm; her face is seen in three quarter view with her head turned slightly to the left. Her partly-closed eyes suggest that she may be blind. The drawing, contained within a letter to the artist's aunt Vera Lachmann, is inscribed (upper centre) 'Theresa, Assisi' and relates to an oil of the same title. Both were executed on the artist's trip to Umbria in 1951.
