Girl with Dove
description A head-and-shoulders portrait of a girl in full face view in the act of raising a white dove above her head; her uplifted eyes are fixed upon the bird. The girl's tight curls are rendered in a stylised manner as a geometric pattern (Frankfurther made similar experiments in other Greek works, such as 'Greek Woman'). The purple used for her hair is echoed in her collar, in contrast to the oxide red of her dress, and she is positioned against a strong Indian-yellow background. The work was painted during the artist's visit to Greece in 1958 and shows the effect of the Mediterranean light upon her palette, as well as a bold, experimental composition based upon the repetition of elliptical forms.
