Eva Frankfurther artist (1930-1959)

Orthodox Jew, Whitechapel

(private collection)

description A half-length portrait of an Orthodox Jewish man, wearing a hat, seen in three quarter face view with head turned to the left. He is seated and holds a piece of cloth between his hands, reminiscent of the composition in the lithograph 'Cloth Merchant, Whitechapel Market'. Frankfurther's other Orthodox East End subjects include the painting 'Orthodox Jew', in which the sitter's payot (side curls) are more prominent. The swiftly executed, vertical brushstrokes used for the clothing and background are similar to those in 'Jewish Woman, East End'.
