East End Mother and Child

(private collection)

description A head-and-shoulders portrait of a red-haired mother wearing a blue dress and an apron, seen in profile facing right; she holds a baby dressed in white, which faces in the opposite direction, resting against her shoulder. The baby is depicted with particular tenderness. The pink background is typical of the softer palette Frankfurther reserved for paintings of women, particularly mothers and babies (although she also uses a similar background in the double portrait 'Friends'), and which indicates an empathy with her subject. She uses the same palette for the mother's rosy complexion and notable impasto in the baby's gown. The red-haired woman may be the same Irish sitter in a further mother-and-baby composition, 'Woman with Two Children', although the mother's complexion is paler and her features more carefully finished in the latter work.
