description A head-and-shoulders portrait of an elderly Lyons Corner House worker, seen in full face view with downcast eyes as he concentrates on finishing his meagre dinner. The precision of his movements, the small plate and small portion of food, contrast with his large, rough but clearly defined hands. The hands and face are painted in a warm ochre and cadmium orange palette echoed by the ochre of the table top. Elsewhere the paint is dry in texture and more thinly and swiftly applied. This is one of a number of portraits of East End workers on their tea or dinner breaks.
