Eva Frankfurther artist (1930-1959)

(private collection)

description A three-quarter length portrait drawing of a middle-aged man, seen in semi-profile, looking to the right, his cap at an angle, hands in his pockets, and the end of a cigarette dangling from his lips. Often flamboyant characters, with a practiced sales patter, 'spivs' were common and distinctive figures on the streets of wartime and postwar London, usually selling black market items from a suitcase.
