Cloth Merchant, Whitechapel Market

(private collection)

description A half-length portrait of a Jewish cloth merchant at Whitechapel market, seen in three quarter face view, looking left, as he holds up a piece of cloth in both hands, presumably to show an unseen customer. This is one of a number of works showing the traditional 'schmatte' (clothing or rag) industry of the old Jewish East End. There is more than one copy of this lithograph but the extent of the edition is not known.
