Eva Frankfurther artist (1930-1959)

Greek Orthodox Priest

(private collection)

description A head-and-shoulders portrait of a Greek Orthodox priest in Kalimavkion and cassock, wearing a large, gold pectoral cross. In the Greek tradition, the pectoral cross is only given to specific priests for faithful service. The bold, flat handling, strong outlines and ornate ochre background, punctuated by red, suggest that the artist is reflecting the style of painting in the Greek icon tradition. The work was painted during Frankfurther's travels to Greece and Israel in 1958, although it is not clear in which country it was carried out.
