Middle Eastern Jew with Red Background
description A head-and-shoulders portrait of a Middle-eastern Jewish man, observed in full face view, his eyes looking outward to meet those of the viewer. He wears a small black hat, similar to a fez and his beard and uncut payot (side curls), as well as dark outer clothing, suggest he may be a Chassidic Jew. The composition is typically cropped to focus attention on the subject's careworn face and serious expression, which is offset by the dramatic dark red background. It is possible that the sitter for this work is the same as for 'Man with Payot' and that the drawing is a study for the painting. The latter, together with 'Middle Eastern Jew with Yellow Background', was made during the artist's visit to Israel in 1958.
